What is Microstars?
Beyond points of light, every star holds a structure and a story that new telescopes will allow us to uncover.
MicroStars, a research initiative led by CIEMAT, dedicated to advancing the frontier of stellar astrophysics.
Our team brings together specialists in optics, astroparticle physics, and astronomy with the shared goal of transforming the way stars are observed. Beyond mere points of light, stars possess structure, dynamics, and activity that remain largely unexplored. We are committed to overcoming current limitations in angular resolution in order to reveal these fundamental properties.

Our Implementation Strategy
Revealing the True Shapes of Stars

Intensity Interferometry with Cherenkov Telescopes
Upgrading existing scientific infrastructures to construct a virtual optical telescope of unprecedented scale, thereby surpassing the constraints of conventional optical interferometry.
Advanced Stellar Parameter Measurement
Planned to enable the study of limb darkening, rapid stellar rotation, stellar winds, accretion disks, magnetic activity, and surface inhomogeneities such as starspots.

Observation of Novel Phenomena
Paving the way for unprecedented imaging of transient phenomena such as novae, or potentially detecting an exoplanet’s shadow transiting across the disk of another star.
Interdisciplinary Collaboration
Integrating expertise from astronomy, physics, engineering, and data science to design, construct, and operate the required observational infrastructure.
